Hair loss is a common concern for many men, and I’m right there with you. Let’s just say I’ve got a pretty close relationship with my clippers these days! As a guy who’s been through the thinning and balding phases, I get how frustrating it can be to see your hairline take a few steps back.

While genetics play a significant role (80% as a matter of fact), there are practical steps you can take to slow the process and keep your hair looking its best.

What Causes Hair Loss?

First things first: why does hair start thinning? For a lot of us, it’s all about genetics. Male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia) is the most common cause.  My own hair has been moving further back for years now. Male pattern baldness is a hereditary condition that’s tough to dodge if it runs in the family, but it’s not the only factor.

Stress and poor health can lead to temporary hair loss (e.g., telogen effluvium), as well as hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, and/or scalp conditions being contributing factors.
Trust me, after years of talking to clients from all walks of life, I’ve seen how managing stress and taking care of yourself can make a real difference. 

Treatment Options: What Can You Do?

Hair loss might be common, but there are plenty of treatments and tools you can try to keep your hair fuller for longer—or make what you have look its best. Some recommended might look like the following.:

Hair Loss Products Products 

I am sure you and everyone else has heard of Minoxidil (Rogaine), right?  In addition to chemical hair enhancers like that there is a wide array of other products and topical methods available.  There are certain oils, like rosemary oil, that promote hair growth, but if you don't want to smell like a roasted chicken, there are professional product lines that specialize in bringing back some of that hairline.  Everyone is unique and I say to talk to your barber and go with what they trust.  If you do go with a topical product treatment, don't forget to Massage your scalp.

Personalized/Professional Scalp Treatments

The range of treatments available for hair loss, including over-the-counter options, topical treatments, and medical interventions is astounding. Ask any doctor about hair loss and they will tell you about different prescriptions available (oral or topical).  You also have cosmetic options like low-level laser therapy, and microneedling.  Whatever it takes, right?  Other advanced options include platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments,, and even hair transplants for those seeking long-term solutions. 

Supplemental Health Feed Your Hair Proper Nutrition 

Consider Vitamins and Supplements.  What you eat has a direct effect on hair health. Foods rich in vitamins like Vitamin D, Vitamin E, biotin, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids can strengthen hair follicles and slow down hair thinning. Incorporating leafy greens, nuts, eggs, and fish into your diet can help provide the nutrients necessary for robust hair growth.  Natural remedies such as biotin, saw palmetto, and or hair growth vitamins are easy to pills to swallow.

Avoid too much heat or Chemicals

Opposite of eating good stuff, eating bad stuff can exacerbate fall out.  You are made up by a bunch of cells and if your lifestyle is harming those cells, chances are there are not enough "dead" cells growing off of your head.  What's the saying? Garbage In Garbage Out??  If you take in a bunch of chemicals, you might as well pour said chemicals on your scalp.  Happy cells, happy follicles, happy scalp all equate to happy hair.

  • Tip: Cold Showers... eliminate more inflammation and tighten those hair follicles with cold water.  Everyone at this point understands the concept of The Cold Plunge, but what's usually missing out is your scalp.

As hair thins, you may need to adjust your hairstyle to suit your current hair condition. Lighten up the load with consistent haircuts.  Keeping up with regular cuts and trims doesn’t just make you look great—it can keep your hair healthier. Split ends and weak strands have a way of dragging down the rest, making hair look thinner than it actually is. A fresh trim every few weeks gives your hair a thicker, fuller appearance and keeps it strong over time. The importance of early prevention goes without saying, and some simple grooming routines can really make a difference.  While never guaranteed, here are some things you can do to hopefully prevent any or additional hair loss.

Choose shampoos and conditioners without sulfates and are specifically designed for hair health. You want ingredients like biotin, caffeine, and keratin, which are known to strengthen hair. Products that are crafted to gently cleanse and strengthen, are perfect for any guy focused on keeping his hair as healthy as possible.  It goes beyond shampoos too.  Using products that exfoliate and condition your scalp make a huge difference.  Maintaining proper oils on the scalp that keep hair healthy is one of the biggest advantages to keeping your crown happy.  Quality Products matter. 

Scalp Massage

Think of your scalp as the foundation of healthy hair. When you’re like me and dealing with thinning, it’s all the more important to keep that foundation strong. Massaging your scalp stimulates blood flow, nourishing hair follicles.  Pair this with a nourishing shampoo—look for formulas with ingredients like biotin, saw palmetto, and caffeine, which help stimulate the scalp and strengthen hair. Feed Your Hair Proper Nutrition

While you can find these in many foods, a supplement may help fill any gaps in your diet. I’ve seen clients who’ve had great results just by adding these into their routines. 

Consistent Haircuts

Cut, Cut, Grow!  Just like a workout, consistency is key.  You might not realize it, but keeping your hair regularly trimmed plays a role in its overall health. While a haircut won’t necessarily prevent hair loss, it removes split ends and damaged hair, allowing your strands to grow out stronger and healthier. The frequency of your trims depends on your style and hair type, but getting a haircut every 4-6 weeks is ideal for most men. Avoid too many Chemicals

Overstyling with heat tools or harsh chemicals can lead to breakage, thinning, and even permanent hair loss. If you use a blow dryer, make sure to use a heat protectant to minimize damage.
